Most international mission trips take significant planning. You may need time away from work, a passport, plane tickets, childcare, a team, and a budget that simply is not realistic for everyone. But experiencing the story behind Nourish’s work in Nicaragua does not require a plane ticket. The Lunch Table Experience is a free 30-minute virtual mission trip to Nicaragua created by Nourish International. In half an hour, viewers step inside the home of a real family, experience a local church community caring for children and families, and see how a meal can become the beginning of something much bigger. You can experience it over your lunch break, with your family, alongside a small group, or as a resource for your church.

What Is The Lunch Table Experience?

The Lunch Table Experience is a 30-minute virtual visit to a real community in Nicaragua. Rather than only reading statistics about poverty, hunger, and child nutrition, viewers are invited into a family’s story and given an opportunity to see the people and relationships behind Nourish’s work. The experience takes viewers inside a family home and into a local church community where children receive meals and families are surrounded by ongoing care and relationships. It is simple enough to experience over a lunch break, but meaningful enough to become part of a church mission gathering, small group discussion, workplace lunch-and-learn, or family conversation about generosity and caring for others. Think of it as part virtual mission trip, part lunch-and-learn, and part invitation to see an ordinary meal differently.

Why Take a Virtual Mission Trip to Nicaragua?

Statistics can help us understand the scale of a need. Stories help us understand the people behind those numbers. In the communities Nourish serves, families can face significant economic challenges that affect their ability to consistently meet needs such as nutritious food, healthcare, education, transportation, and other daily expenses. According to Nourish program data, 70% of surveyed families in the communities Nourish serves live in poverty and 26% live in extreme poverty. Among families living in extreme poverty, 91% of Nourish children live in households with approximately $1.02 or less available per person per day. Those numbers provide important context.

The Lunch Table Experience helps make that context personal. In 30 minutes, viewers can step into a real family’s story, see a local church community in action, and better understand why consistent nutrition and long-term relationships matter in the lives of children and families.

Bring The Lunch Table Experience to Your Church

The Lunch Table Experience was designed to be easy for churches to use without the logistics of planning a full international trip or large event. Because it runs just 30 minutes, it can fit naturally into:

  • A Sunday school class
  • A missions gathering
  • A small group
  • A youth group night
  • A church staff meeting
  • A missions committee meeting
  • A church-wide lunch-and-learn

Invite people to bring their lunch, watch the experience together, and leave time afterward for discussion and prayer. This creates a simple shared mission experience that can help people understand child hunger, generosity, and the importance of long-term local church partnership in a more personal way. Nourish currently works in partnership with more than 110 local churches across Nicaragua. Together, these partnerships help provide more than 4 million nutritious meals annually to 11,000+ children. The Lunch Table Experience gives churches a closer look at the relationships behind those numbers.

Host a Lunch-and-Learn

The experience can also work well outside a traditional church setting. Families, workplaces, schools, small groups, and community organizations can gather for a simple lunch-and-learn without preparing a full presentation. All you need is a screen, 30 minutes, and a few people willing to experience the story together. Afterward, discussion can be as simple as asking:

  • What stood out to you?
  • What surprised you?
  • What did you notice about the role of the local church?
  • Did anything change the way you think about an ordinary meal?
  • What is one way you could respond?

For families, it can also create a natural way to talk with children about gratitude, generosity, hunger, and what it means to care for people beyond our own communities. Instead of trying to explain those ideas only in the abstract, families can experience a real story together and talk about what they saw.

What You’ll See: A Family, a Meal, and Local Church Partnership

One of the most important parts of The Lunch Table Experience is that it puts people and relationships at the center of the story. Viewers see that a meal is not simply food being provided. It happens within the context of a community. Nourish works in partnership with local churches because these churches are already present in the communities they serve and maintain relationships with children and families over time. Meals become one part of broader care that can also include health and nutrition support, education, youth development, mentoring, and discipleship. That is why Nourish often says: The meal is only the beginning.

A meal can meet an immediate need. A relationship can continue. And consistent support can help create opportunities for a child to grow in mind, body, and spirit.

What Comes Next: The Meal Plan

For viewers who finish The Lunch Table Experience and want to become more connected to the work, Nourish created Meal Plan. Meal Plan is a different approach to traditional child sponsorship. Instead of being connected to only one child, Meal Plan connects gift partners to a local church community in Nicaragua and gives them a way to follow the impact their monthly support helps make possible. For $40 per month, Meal Plan helps provide a child with daily meals and full monthly care.

That support can include:

  • Nutritious daily meals
  • Health interventions
  • After-school education
  • Prenatal and infant care
  • Christ-centered discipleship

Meal Plan gift partners are also connected to an assigned community and receive access to an Impact Dashboard with real-time stories, updates, resources, and ways to stay connected over time. Learn more about Meal Plan now.
